Louis Kahn’s Class of 1945 Library: Phillips Exeter Academy
PRESERVING AN ARCHITECTURAL ICON
Designed by Louis Kahn, Phillips Exeter Academy’s Class of 1945 Library has occupied a central and cherished place on the campus since it opened in 1971. It is widely considered one of the most significant 20th century buildings in America. A comprehensive Master Plan for the Library building was undertaken by Ann Beha Architects in 2013 and will be completed in 2015. As part of this plan, a series of ‘pilot projects’ were identified, designed to test proposed renovation assumptions. The first of these projects, a Library Commons on the ground floor, was completed in 2015, providing a café and group study spaces.
